> ## backstory
In the Vale – A Valley river-fairy community.
Disease breaks out, natural magics don’t work, elders succumb almost immediately to unconsciousness and death, village in utter chaos. They send out Lark, a border sentry and novice healer, to look for help on the edges of the Vale.
Lark encounters an Old Priestess traveling the woods around his village, she’s familiar with herbalism and diseases, he brings her back. We offer every precious thing we have for her to stay and treat the population, assisting her with converting our meeting hall into an herbalist hovel.
Old woman suggests quarantine so the disease won't spread to neighboring fey. It isolates them. Lark is told to stay on the outskirts of the Vale, guarding the entry of the vale to contain the spread of the disease. The Old woman personally brings him tinctures as time goes on, but is otherwise separated from the village.
Old woman builds trust by providing healing, but inevitably the symptoms re-emerge and the Priestess requires more and more of the herbal resources in the Vale.
Symptoms progress first as hallucinations->wing rot-> progressive paralysis -> unconsciousness -> Death. Woman keeps the body of the dead for autopsy and cremation. Rot symptoms require wing amputation.
Stays in village experimenting with our native plants and reagents we gather for a 'cure', but is using reagents and fey bodies to create potions and feeding it to survivors. This accelerates and refines the disease. She stows away all other precious resources and body parts for use in her craft.
While living for weeks in isolation on the edges of the Vale, Lark turns away outsiders, joking that his sentry duty was pointless: “We’re doomed to die. I don’t know what is left to guard, but you can return to bury us later.” One of the outsiders says he will send for another cleric for a second opinion.
Eventually Larkspur is called in for examination after weeks away from the river village. Woman ‘treats’ him by amputating his wings to stop the progression, as many before, and cauterizes the wounds on his back with the touch of her finger. In his agony, he sees her storing his wings in corked jars full of un-tainted wings.
A large boot kicks open the door, with proclamations of “HAG!” from the voices of many men, and the herbalist hovel is upended. Lark’s legs are crushed by the examination table. Lark claws at the ground until he is away from the sounds of slaughter until he loses consciousness at the edge of the wood.
Notes:
The aspiring Hag was the origin of the disease. Her meeting with Lark was too serendipitous. She obtained all the herbalist knowledge and resources of the village while posing as a healer, and eventually used the lives and bodies of the population as research and reagents as well.
Lark is hag-touched, which strengthened his connection to necromancy.
Lark consuming tinctures made from the bodies of his kin is why he hears screaming when he consumes food that has a living source, plant or animal.
Lark has an inherent distrust of old women, which is why he freaked out on Grandma Shoe.
Lark has a disgust of Alchemy, which is why he was very cautious of Eckhardt, especially because he’s old.
Same apprehensiveness at Barradyne.
Lark has a disgust of the value of life being commodified, as his people were victim to it as magical reagents.## Personality
Pissy Wheelchair Fairy Druid.
Hears the screams of life, sometimes whilst it is dying, and sometimes simply as a reflection of it's death.
